The Do-Over, Los Angeles 8-30-09

On August 30th, I was honored and privileged to rock one of the most respected parties in the entire country if not the globe. The ''Do-Over'' is held every Sunday during the summer in sunny Los Angeles and features some of the biggest DJ's in the game each and every single weekend. The party focuses on quality soulful music and party vibes from hip-hop to funk, broken beats and everything in between. Past DJ's have included DJ AM, The Beat Junkies, A-Trak and tons of other incredibly talented and respected gents. It is also one of the hardest parties to land a gig at so I was incredibly humbled when I found out I got put on the bill while I was out West that weekend. I have to give major, major shout outs to my man Waldo for looking out for me as well as Chris Haycock and Jamie Strong from Stones Throw.

I arrived in L.A. in the early afternoon that Sunday with Bonics and we headed straight to DJ Morse Code's place in Hollywood to kick it for a bit before we headed out to the party. Morse Code was also playing that day and had planned a special set dedicated to his close friend DJ AM who had passed away the Friday before. When we arrived it was a who's who of Los Angeles' best DJ's in the place including Steve1der, Thee Mike B, Pase Rock, Fashen and Spider. My homies from Pittsburgh's own Shop412, Aaron & Christian were also hanging out and Christian had been cooking up some burgers for everyone. I was nervous as hell to rock that day (DJ Fashen called me out haha!) so I downed a couple beers with everyone and tried to chill out for a bit.

After kicking it for a bit, we all headed out to Crane's Hollywood Tavern, where the ''Do-Over'' was held every week. When we arrived around 6pm, the party was in full effect and packed to the brim. Not to mention the likes of Madlib, Ras Kass, Mayer Hawthorne, Black Milk and the Strong Arm Steady crew were in the house! Crazy. Morse Code went on around 7pm and absolutely murdered it. I was set to go on after Morse and I started just as the sun went down. Being that there were 4 or 5 DJ's playing that day, I didn't really go in with any kind of plan because I wasn't sure what everyone was going to be playing. I went off the top of the head and it went really well. Everyone told me to play what I loved so I ended up playing almost an entire hour of classic hip-hop and it felt SO GOOD. The crowd was with me the whole time so I went with it! Check out both the videos (make sure you peep the end!) below and all of the pics! Oh and don't forget to download my set and check it out for yourself.
