Three days ago I had a gang of friends, colleagues and various Pittsburgh party people come out to celebrate the release of my latest club mixtape, "Real Feel 2011" at S BAR. The Sunday before labor day is always an exceptionally good night for partying in the city. It's actually one of my favorite nights of the year and the time when I separate Summer from Fall. College students are back and Pittsburgh regains a little bit of lost energy. I started my series of Real Feel mixtapes back in '08 and this year marks the 3rd installment. I missed last year's deadline because McFly and I were busy on our "McNugget" project.
Any DJ will tell you that putting out a club mix is easier said than done, especially these days when people are exposed to so much different music at such a rapid rate. This makes it extremely hard for songs (let alone groups & artists) to have any longevity therefore making it hard to compile a proper mix that will stand the test of time. I worked on this mixtape on and off for a few months and finally knocked out the final version about a month ago.
Real Feel is a continuous live mix of different genres. It's called "Real Feel" because it's completely LIVE djing and its meant to showcase what I do in the clubs. Nowadays, most mixtapes you hear are created on the computer while someone perfects every single second staring at the screen. Sadly, we also live in a day and age where kids are buying DJ software that matches the beats for you. That is not DJing. That's a whole other blog post though. I find that I've always enjoyed live mixes much more because it shows the DJ is not always perfect and I really enjoy hearing those tiny imperfections in the mix even if the average listener would never be able to tell the difference. You'll see that some of the songs in the mix are the tracks of the moment but this is absolutely necessary when you're adding the year to the mix. I want people to go back and listen to this mix in a few years and be reminded of what they were doing in 2011. However, I also want to show my range and create something that you'll enjoy listening to over and over for a long time.
